With May approaching, the summer heat is getting to us all. And well, while some of us are dying to get on vacation and enjoy, the rest are stuck with exams. (Insert Dramatic Sigh Here) Never the less, the crave for a summer holiday is never gone! And especially kids being kids, they can never have enough of those playing, gaming, lazing and relaxing moments with the people we want to spend leisure time with like some friends. But let’s not forget that while they’re at it, they always want to keep their parents happy with their activities and enjoyment on. How do they do that? Simple. Get the “Chitrasutra” by Chinha and enjoy painting to the fullest while keeping your parents happy because this will definitely help one in getting the best marks in Elementary & Intermediate.

Two M F Husain works to be auctioned for first time

Two paintings by M F Husain will be offered at an auction for
the first time at Sotheby's next month.
LONDON: Two paintings by M F Husain will be offered at an auction for the first time at Sotheby's next month which will also see a host of important works by artists like V S Gaitonde, F N Souza and Jehangir Sabavala going under the hammer.

Hot on the heels of the landmark Amaya Collection, its first evening auction of Indian art, Sotheby's has sourced an exceptional line-up of works - many fresh to the market and with outstanding provenances - for its Modern and Contemporary South Asian Art sale in London on June 11.

Offered for the first time in this sale, on the centenary year of his birth, Husain's exceptional 1961 oil on canvas 'Jhoola' (estimated at 220,000-250,000 pounds) was acquired directly from the artist during the 1960s. It depicts two women atop a swing (jhoola) which hangs from a tree.

A second work by Husain, 'Elephants One', estimated at 100,000-150,000 pounds is offered for sale for the first time since it was acquired by the owner's husband in New York in 1964, where he was posted as a representative of the Indian delegation to the UN.

Other highlights include Gaitonde's recently discovered masterpiece, the luminous Painting No.1, previously in the collection of the great international champion of Indian art John D Rockefeller III, as well as important works by Souza, Bhupen Khakhar and Sabavala. The sale will also feature exciting works by contemporary Indian and Pakistani artists, including Deutsche Bank's Contemporary Artist of the Year, Mohammad Imran Qureshi.

Yamini Mehta, Sotheby's International Head of South Asian Art, Indian and South Asian Art, commented, "We are thrilled to be presenting a remarkable auction that has been carefully curated with wonderful museum-quality works that are very fresh to the market and come from private collections in India, Europe and America.

"Many of these works are masterpieces coming from their first owners into the market for the first time. It is a sale that offers something for everyone, with exciting estimates and opportunities for new and established collectors to collect fine examples of Indian and Pakistani art from the 20th and 21st centuries."

Souza's 'Christ on Palm Sunday', executed in 1956, is estimated at 200,000-300,000 pounds. Offered for sale for the first time since it was acquired by a Dutch collector in Paris in 1968, S H Raza's 'Black Moon' (est. 50,000-70,000 pounds) is a remarkable painting produced during an important transitional period in the artist's career following his visit to America, where he encountered Abstract Expressionism.

Executed in 1972, Khakhar's 'Air, Steam and Speed,' estimated at 100,000-150,000 pounds, makes its appearance on the market for the first time in over 30 years from an English collection.

Property from a private European collection, Sabavala's Untitled of 1977 is coming to auction for the first time with an estimate of 100,000-150,000 pounds.

Record broken: Half a billion dollars raised at Christie's

Record broken: Half a billion dollars raised at Christie's

With a Jackson Pollock and Jean-Michel Basquiat breaking auction records, Christies enjoyed the most lucrative auction in history.

Basquiat's Dustheads sold for $48.8 million

By
An auction of contemporary art at Christie's, New York, has left art-sale records in tatters.
Wednesday’s auction was the most successful in history, with almost half a billion dollars changing hands.

A spokesperson for Christie's has announced a “staggering” total of $495,021,500 (£325 million) with 94 per cent of the lots sold. Nine pieces were purchased for more than $10 million each and 23 fetched over $5 million a piece.

Jackson Pollock’s drip painting made art sale history, fetching an unprecedented $58.4 million (£38.3 million) at the auction. His Number 19 (1948), an iconic drip-paint work, had been predicted to sell at $25-$35 million. Last year, Pollock's drip-painting from 1951 sold for $40.4 million but his other works are rumoured to have fetched higher prices in low-key, private deals.

Another success was graffiti artist Jean-Michel Basquiat’s work Dustheads. The work sold for $48.8 million (£32 million), also surpassing pre-sale estimates of $25-$35 million. This marks a record auction price for the artist, who died in 1988 from a heroin overdose aged 27.

German galleries block VAT increase

German galleries block VAT increase

Dealers and even the country’s culture minister oppose a 12% tax rise on the purchase of original works of art
By Isabelle Spicer and Ermanno Rivetti. Web only

Even the German minister of culture,
Bernd Neumann,
opposed a rise in VAT on original works of art
The German federal association of galleries and dealers (Bundesverband Deutscher Galerien und Kunsthändler—BDGV) has, for the moment, won a major battle to keep VAT rates down on the purchase of original works of art.
The European Commission has been trying to raise German VAT tax on original works of art from 7% to 19% to bring it in line with higher VAT rates in the rest of Europe. The move is widely opposed by the art world as well as the German minister of culture, Bernd Neumann. The BDGV, working with cultural and economic policy experts as well as institutions, has been campaigning against this and recently blocked the approval process, making it unlikely that there will be a rise in the VAT this year.

The next federal assembly meeting is scheduled for 4 June, and members will again discuss the potential increase in VAT. If the members can’t agree then, it is likely that Germany will keep the reduced tax for another year. “We still can’t predict anything concrete,” says Thea Dymke, from the BDGV, “but this is what we are hoping for.”

The tax would not affect imports, which will still be subject to a reduced VAT rate of 7% if they are “original” and a full rate if they are editioned works, such as photographs or video. Primary market sales, between artists and buyers, will still benefit from the reduced rate of 7%, meaning that a collector would pay 19% for a work from a gallery, but only 7% for the same work bought directly from the artist. According to Sturm, “gallerists are worried about this point because the difference in price is notable. However, they hope the artists will show solidarity. Moreover, collectors usually buy from galleries because they are guarantees of quality, value and the importance of the artists on the market.”

Nina Koldi, the co-director of the Campagne Première in Berlin, however, points out that there will always be a difference in VAT rates between countries. During the most recent edition of the Arco contemporary art fair in Madrid, the gallery sold a sculpture that was hit by a 21% VAT tax. If the buyer had bought the same piece in the gallery in Berlin, it would have only incurred a 7% tax rate. Koldi says the tax rise will have a worse effect on smaller galleries, which are already suffering because of the financial crisis.

Previously hidden Salvador Dali paintings go under the hammer

Previously hidden Salvador Dali paintings go under the hammer

The 14 original watercolour fruit studies were commissioned in 1969 by the publisher Jean-Paul Schneider

Mark Brown, arts correspondent
The Guardian, Wednesday 15 May 2013 18.22 BST

Two of Dali's 14 original watercolour fruit studies.
At a glance they seem like familiar 19th-century botanical lithographs, the type you see on endless hotel room walls. But look closer and the plum appears to be running away, the raspberries look embarrassed and the grapefruit … well, it's enough to make the viewer blush.
The 14 original watercolour fruit studies are in fact by the surrealist artist Salvador Dali and are remarkable because they have remained more or less hidden since 1969, the year of their creation.
"They are wonderful, wonderful things," said William O'Reilly, director of impressionist and modern art at Bonhams, the auction house that announced their saleon Wednesday. "One reason being they are so fresh and are absolutely unseen." They were commissioned in 1969 by the publisher Jean-Paul Schneider and then became a series of lithographs. The publisher kept the originals until they were sold in 2000 to an unnamed European collector who is now selling them.
"No one had ever seen the original watercolours," said O'Reilly, who recalled the thrill of entering the seller's house "and there they were on the wall, it was completely unexpected. That sort of thing doesn't happen a lot."
The works have names such as Hasty Plum, Raspberry Blush, Wild Blackberries and Erotic Grapefruit, which includes a leaf falling backwards as it is drenched by a shower of juice.
Each painting is valued at £40,000-£70,000 with the series expected to make close to £1m. O'Reilly said the paintings shone a light on the artist's hyper-fertile imagination, but said they were subversive and ahead of their time as well as entertaining. Here is Dali taking genuine 19th-century botanical lithographs and painting over them in much the same way as the Chapman Brothers took real Goya prints and embellished them, he said.
The works will be sold at Bonhams, London, on 18 June.
